We've all seen Brandy Chastain in her sweaty, grass-stained soccer uniform. We've all seen her in the muscle mid-drift exposing and infamous Nike Sports Bra. How about seeing her, in person, in a floor length formal dress? How about Dara Torres? How about Serena Williams? How about Dr. Dot Richardson?

The Women's Sports Foundation held its annual dinner to salute women in sports on October 16th at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. The theme of the dinner celebration was "NO LIMITS." Every breath uttered through amplified microphone articulated this appropriate message in a myriad of ways to an awed crowd of former and current athletes, fans and admirers.

Billie Jean King was the undisputed icon of the evening; the subject of many potent speeches, the inspiration to those finding words to describe their own journey, their own success.

In a marvelously articulated and humorously relayed speech accepting her award for Courage in the name of former Track and Field star Wilma Rudolph, Martina Navratilova poignantly ended on the phrase, "after all, consider the alternatives."

No Limits.

Consider the alternatives.

The former keeps you dreaming and the latter keeps you humble. The former represents a certain "potential" and the latter offers a "perspective." The former and the latter are the elements that make good athletes great; a willingness to see the goal instead of the obstacles in between, and the objectivity to recognize what it's all worth.

After having been named the 2000 ACC and IWLCA player of the year, the 2000 NCAA tournament MVP and recieving the first ever Honda Award for lacrosse, Maryland's Jen Adams took the stage to be honored with the nation's best athletes of 2000.

Proving that they are as good at stalking as they are at the game of lacrosse, Maryland head coach Cindy Timchal and former UVA standout Stephy Samaras managed to sneak backstage for a picture with presentors Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn and Women's Sports Foundation Sportswoman of the Year Serena Williams.

Not to be outdone by their more famous counterparts, the womenslacrosse.com table traded in their cleats and jerseys for more formal wear on this evening...can you still recognize them? From left to right: Gary Gait, Jen Adams, Stephy Samaras, Laura Field, Cristi Samaras, Cindy Timchal, Cathy Samaras, Bob Carpenter.
